your guess is as good as mine

I have this wonderful 70s Space Saver drip coffeemaker which I got at a thrift store for like $6.00 including all the hardware to mount it under a cabinet if I wanted to Save Space. So far it has been great, and it actually makes good coffee in spite of its age. The people who donated it to Goodwill must have never used it before they gave it up.
This morning in my normal groggy stupor I filled the reservoir with enough water for two mugs of coffee, put a new filter and coffee into the basket, put the pot on the hotplate and turned it on so it would be brewing while I fed and watered the cats and took my shower.
After my shower, I got dressed and went back to the kitchen to get my coffee. The pot was full, but it was just hot water. I could have sworn that I had filled the basket with fresh coffee, but apparently I'd forgotten and run a brewing cycle with just water. I pulled out the basket to look and, amazingly, it had a new filter and fresh coffee in it, both completely dry. I am totally baffled as to how the water made it from the reservoir through the pump and into the pot without actually passing through the basket!
I dumped out the hot water, replaced the pot, refilled the reservoir and started the brewing cycle again. I stood there and watched until coffee started dripping into the pot. This time around it was brown, as expected.

Thing is, the reservoir on this coffeemaker is removable, so you take it out and fill it. So I never actually fill the pot and then pour it into the reservoir because I can just put the reservoir under the faucet.
I really am totally baffled.

My guess: You filled the pot with water but never poured it into the reservoir. OR you poured it into the reservoir before you filled the pot with water.
