but not his version

& I rattled; he fumbled
to pick & I knew
slow down, both of you
& I: brain too fast for mouth
& he: brain too big
one time he said "love"
seventeen ways in ONE WORD
& I had coffee
& I was a boy
& this man was a boy too
& he was my friend
