Today I got my monthly email telling me that one of my credit card statements was ready to view online. The card in question is actually no longer active, and it has the lowest interest rate of any debts I carry, so I just pay the minimum right away every month and sit on it.

I recently switched checking accounts, so I've had to update my information online at places where I use my checking account to make payments. I went to put in the new information just now only to find that Capital One requires the security code from the signature panel on your credit card for you to add a new checking account.

I don't carry this card with me because I no longer use it, so I don't have that code while I'm at work. Whatever, I'll set it up when I get home, so it's not a big deal, but big deal or not, I still don't get it. Why would you need to prove your ownership of the card to be allowed to pay it? Adding a checking account affords you no ability except to pay the credit card.

Muhuaha! Now that I have your account password I will add my checking routing and account information and then submit a payment to your creditor! Ha ha! You will never know what hit you when they tell you the minimum payment you owe is now zero dollars!

What's this!? Curses! I have to prove I own the card to make a payment on it!? My plan! Foiled! Noooooo!

My distaste for credit card companies is well-documented, but sometimes their practices are just laughable. Someday if you have time I'll tell you how much fun it is to try to find links to specific services on the Bank of America and American Express websites.
