7 haiku 4
There have always been
people. And people will die.
Surely I know this.
I don't remember
why she was holding my hand,
but tubes in your nose.
Some of these places
are nothing but babies' births
ringing on cellphones.
At your wake no one
seemed disconcerted by the
lobby's Coke machine.
To cry when you can't,
to smile unexpectedly
and not feel guilty.
It was freezing out.
I looked and built poetry
out of epitaphs.
I wrote one for you,
so you will have one more thing
in common with them.
