labor of love of labor, etc.
I recently made ten more copies of my album from 2006 to send to some friends who didn't get one in the first small handmade distribution. It takes about two hours to make ten copies, and that's if I'm burning copies and printing covers while cutting, folding, gluing in the special inserts and doing the Sharpie artwork on the discs.
When I originally designed the artwork for the album, I knew it was going to be more involved than a stereotypical indie release in a paper sleeve. What's funny is the only thing I did to make it "a little easier on myself" was to design both the front and back cover in grayscale. It does require a color printer to print the cover exactly the way it's supposed to look, but the cover a) won't look terrible if someone chooses to print the DIY version from the album download page without color, and b) won't suck the life out of my printer's color cartridges if I ever do really mass produce the things.
Luckily I don't get a lot of requests for the CD version of the album.
